Go-ahead given for padel courts at Wilmslow Leisure Centre

Cheshire East has given the go-ahead for two padel courts at Wilmslow Leisure Centre.
The courts will be built on the site of a disused multi-use games area (MUGA).
The application was submitted by Everybody Health and Leisure which runs the leisure centre on behalf of the council.
It was approved by a Cheshire East planning officer under delegated authority this week.
A report from the planning officer who reviewed the application, states: "The proposals represent the use of a previously developed brownfield site supported under neighbourhood, local, national planning policy.
"Whilst the proposals would result in the loss of an existing MUGA, it is noted this surface appears to have not been utilised for a considerable period, the planning statement advises this period to be five years."
It adds: "The proposals would retain an outdoor recreation/sporting facility associated with the leisure centre and this would in turn help promote healthy lifestyles for the public of Cheshire East in turn also supported under policy."
Padel tennis is a sport which is rapidly increasing in popularity.
The planning statement submitted by Everybody Health and Leisure said the benefits of introducing padel courts include physical health benefits and the general accessibility of padel to improve fitness levels, given it is a sport with simple rules and a smaller court size.
It said the sport is accessible for beginners, families and older adults and is frequently played in groups thereby expanding its benefits, including improving mental wellbeing.
