How Cheshire residents can take part in RSPB's largest garden bird survey
The worlds largest garden wildlife survey is set to take place later this week.
The Big Garden Birdwatch is the world's largest garden wildlife survey, with hundreds of thousands of nature lovers taking part each year.
The survey helps to build a picture of how garden birds are faring in the UK and will take place on 24th, 25th and 26th January.
Across the UK, an incredible 60,000 people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch in 2024, with more than 12,000 people participating in Cheshire.
House Sparrows took the top spot last year as the most commonly spotted bird with the Blue Tit coming in second place.
However despite this, these birds have suffered severe declines.
Species such as the starling, currently at number two in the Big Garden Birdwatch charts, has seen its numbers drop by more than 80 per cent since 1979.
On the other hand, much-loved garden species such as the blue tit and great tit, have seen their average numbers rise by 24 per cent and 61 per cent respectively.
The Birdwatch is important now more than ever as the UK has lost a shocking 38 million birds from its skies in the last 60 years.
Registration for the Big Garden Birdwatch is open until Sunday 26 January 2025.
