Quarry Bank in Styal is asking for donations to help restore its gardens following heavy flooding over the new year period.

The River Bollin sits at the heart of Quarry Bank powering the wheel of the mill, which played such an integral part in the Manchester industrial revolution.

Major flooding alongside a period of heavy snowfall has led to significant damage at Quarry Bank.

Heavy rain caused the river to breach its banks in the woodlands and Mill Meadow leading to some major erosion (Wilmslow Nub News).

Unfortunately, the force of the floodwater has caused a landslide in the gardens, destroying much of the lower path network and leaving much of the gardens off limits to visitors.

Further damage has also affected a small number of properties in Styal.

The National Trust plans on carrying out major survey work to fully assess the damage (Wilmslow Nub News).

The National Trust says that it is too early to say how much it will cost to repair as they plan on carrying out major survey work to fully assess the situation.

A Bollin Riverlands project is already underway carrying out work that aims to slow the flow of water in the river to reduce the impact that extreme weather can have near waterways in Cheshire.

While this will take time, small interventions such as creating ponds and installing leaky dams in the river will have a long-term benefit to places like Quarry Bank, neighbouring communities and the wider landscape.
