Two local care homes are opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II. 

Care UK's Long Stone Manor, in Wilmslow, and Cranford Grange, in Knutsford, are welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with their very own 1940s-themed street parties.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end.

This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

The team at both homes have been hard at work organising their own special commemorative events, which will see residents and guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, entertainment and dancing as they embrace the spirit of the 1940s.

Long Stone Manor will be creating a nostalgic atmosphere by hosting a vintage-style tea dance on Friday 2 May from 2.30pm–4.30pm, offering guests the chance to step back in time and embrace the spirit of the 1940s.

Local performer Emily Owen will provide live piano and vocals, performing well-loved songs from the era, as residents and visitors take to the floor.

With the home decorated in period style and afternoon tea served, the event promises a warm, thoughtful tribute to VE Day and the community spirit it represents.

Meanwhile, at Cranford Grange, on Thursday 8 May from 2.30pm-4.30pm, residents, families and friends can look forward to a lively afternoon of music and celebration.

With swing music from professional singer Tracey Richards setting the tone, guests will be treated to a delightful mix of 1940s-themed cocktails, a traditional street party atmosphere, and a charming tea party.

Cranford Grange resident, Elizabeth, age 96, said: "It is very important that we celebrate VE Day and commemorate the end of the war. It was the day we had hoped and prayed would come.

"My brother was serving in the army, away in Germany, and I remember I was 16 years old, dancing in the street with my younger sister while our father was shouting at us to come inside the house.

"It was a fabulous day in 1945, and we're looking forward to recreating that same joy and happiness here at Cranford Grange, 80 years later."

Emma Tillyer, Home Manager at Long Stone Manor, said: "We're passionate about building and maintaining relationships within our community here at Long Stone Manor, so we're pleased to be opening our doors to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day for a special day of sharing memories and a wonderful vintage tea dance. 

"Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, especially those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity.

"In the run up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and it's been inspiring to hear everyone's experiences and memories from wartime Britain."
