Sainsbury's will be closing its Cheadle cafe today (Friday 11 April).

This cafe is among 61 that will be be closing, as part of the supermarket chain's plans for a 'major overhaul' of its estate.

The supermarket is "exploring future opportunities for the spaces", a spokesperson said.

The plan also involves cutting around 3,000 jobs in an effort to 'boost performance'.

Sainsbury's said it wants to create space to offer more of its fresh food ranges in more stores, deciding to close its remaining patisserie, hot food and pizza counters.

The chain argued that the "majority" of its most loyal shoppers do not use the cafés regularly, with cafés and food halls run by specialist partners becoming "more and more popular."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "In January, we shared the difficult decision that our remaining Sainsbury's Cafes would be closing and this will take place on 11 April.

"We are sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

"Our stories continue to support the customers and communities they serve in a range of ways, including through fundraising, volunteering, and donations to good causes.

"We're exploring future opportunities for the space and will keep our customers and colleagues updated."

Sainsbury's CEO Simon Roberts said in January: "As we accelerate into year two and beyond of our strategy, we are facing into a particularly challenging cost environment which means we have had to make tough choices about where we can afford to invest and where we need to do things differently to make our business more efficient and effective.

"The decisions are essential to ensure we continue to drive forward our momentum but have also meant some difficult choices impacting our dedicated colleagues in a number of parts of our business."
