Supporters took on a challenge to raise money for the charity Wilmslow Wells for Africa.

The charity is a direct action, volunteer-run group that aims to provide sources of clean water in rural African villages.

It was formed in the 1980s by Brenda and Keith Mottershead who lived in Wilmslow before moving to Johannesburg, South Africa for three years.

Brenda wrote: "The seeds of the enterprise Wilmslow Wells were sown in South Africa between 1980 and 1983."

After more than a decade of helping to provide clean water to communities in Africa, Brenda Mottershead died, at the age of 73, in 1999.

Over 20 years later the charity is still going from strength to strength and has in recent years extended its funding support to include sanitation projects.

To date, the charity has raised more than £1.65 million with the help of kindly volunteers.

Earlier this year, the charity decided to do the Wilmslow Wells challenge, using bike or bus pass, to mark its 40th anniversary.

Several of its supporters have taken on the challenge to boost funds during this anniversary year, including Ian Porter who decided to undertake the challenge entirely using his bus pass for the 250-mile journey.

The charity is delighted to say that about £17,400 has already been raised by these special efforts.

They also raised £17,000 at their annual Gardens Day in June of this year.

The team of four trustees meet regularly to decide on other suitable projects to fund.

The latest project they authorised was the construction of 100 basic toilets in several Malawi villages.

The charity is appealing for more volunteers to help organise fundraising events.

Everyone is welcome to hear more about the charity's work at their AGM on Monday 28 October, 7.30 pm, at the Wilmslow Methodist Church on Water Lane.
