WILMSLOW: an interactive map has revealed who is the most-searched-for person on Wikipedia from our town.

Website The Pudding has created a people map of the UK, matching place names with their 'most Wikipedia-ed' resident, with Wilmslow included.

This person could be someone who was born in, lived in, or has connections to the place.

This may come as a surprise to some, but the answer is one of the best-known brains in Britain.

It is mathematician and Bletchley Park employee Alan Turing.

While he is sometimes described as a Mancunian, the London-born University of Manchester graduate is arguably best tied to Wilmslow.

Turing is best known for his decoding of German ciphers during World War II, potentially saving thousands of lives.

In the early 1950s, he lived on 43 Adlington Rd in Wilmslow, when the home was known as Holly Mead.

It was here where he lived when he lost his job due to being prosecuted in 1952 for 'homosexual acts'.

He was subsequently chemically castrated, which ceased in his final years at the idyllic Victorian home.

Unfortunately, it is not a happy connection, as it was the site of his death, where he was found on his bed in his Wilmslow home on June 8 1954.

This week marks the 67th anniversary of his death.

Mr Turing was also known to have laid the foundations for the modern computer.

So it is no surprise that he is the most searched for Wilmslow resident on Wikipedia.

His Wilmslow house sold for a million pounds just over seven years ago.

It was not the only town Wilmslow Nub News covers that was on the map.

Current footballers Paul Turnbull and Devante Cole were the most famous folk from Handforth and Alderley Edge respectively.

Unfortunately, Styal don't get a look in on the map, which you can view in full here.
