Wilmslow's Parliamentary Constituency of Tatton to Change in 2023 Proposals

Planned changed to constituency boundaries could see major changes Wilmslow's parliamentary constituency.

Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, and Handforth will all remain in the constituency of Tatton, according to new plans drawn up by The Boundary Commission for England.

However, if the proposals go ahead, the south west of Tatton constituency will narrow and become absorbed into the neighbouring Cheshire constituency of Northwich.

This would mean from 2023, these towns (pictured above) will no longer share an MP with the people of Wilmslow.

This includes the people of Whitley to Lostock Graham to Lach Dennis. It will also cut right through Great Budworth.

Tatton's current MP is Esther McVey, who covers Wilmslow, and the towns set to potentially move.

If the Conservative MP for Tatton decided to stand in the 2024 election, she would be serving a smaller geographic area.

Tatton will also gain Lymm and Thelwall from Warrington South, if plans are approved.

Of the 533 current English constituencies, less than 10% will remain unchanged under the plans, with Wilmslow's neighbour Macclesfield being one of them.

England will gain 10 new MPs, while Wales and Scotland will lose eight and two MPs under the potential plans.

The Boundary Commission for England says the aim is to make Parliament fairer by giving each MP a roughly similar number of voters.

Other Boundary changes in Cheshire East were announced.

This included as moving the boundary lines in Holmes Chapel from Congleton's constituency, to Northwich.

The commission is required to draw up seats with 69,724 to 77,062 electors by law, so it is unlikely these changes will not go ahead, but a consultation period will begin.

While the number of MPs nationwide will remain, the number of constituencies in the North West will fall from 75 to 73.
